Matawan Police Department – Diversity in Law Enforcement Recruiting & Hiring (2022 Report)

Pursuant to the December 2021 Attorney General Guideline “Promoting Diversity in Law Enforcement Recruiting and Hiring,” the Matawan Police Department is committed to doing all that we can to hire staff who reflect the community that we serve.
(See N.J.S.A.52:17B-4.10.)

The 2020 Census indicates that Matawan Borough’s population is 76.7% White, 14.9% Black, 9.3% Hispanic, and 4.2% Asian. As of December 31, 2021, the Matawan Police Department employed 24 sworn officers: 83% were white, 12.5% were black, 8.3 % Hispanic, 4.17% were multi-racial, 0% were Asian. 8.3% of our sworn officers are female. Although our diversity numbers are fairly representative of the Borough we serve, we recognize our deficiency in representing the Asian population. We will continue to strive to increase the number of diverse hires within our agency and will enhance our efforts to seek diverse applicants to join our agency. This will be accomplished through job fares, such as the outreach event held by the Monmouth County Chiefs of Police Association at Brookdale Community College on March 8,2022, community and faith-based events and recruiting initiatives held in conjunction with various educational and community-based organizations.
