While larger police agencies have the manpower to have many officers specialized in investigating different crimes, the detectives within the Matawan Police Department are responsible for investigating criminal activity ranging from homicide to petty theft.

The Detective Division is currently staffed by two officers and is supervised by a sergeant who oversees the Support Services Bureau. The Matawan Police Detective Division regularly works cases with many county, state and federal agencies, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in addition to out of state jurisdictions such as the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The Detective Division is responsible for the following areas in addition to their investigative caseload:

  • Narcotic investigations

  • Juvenile offenses

  • Evidence, property and identification

  • Crime scene processing

  • Internet related crimes

  • Bias crimes and offenses

  • Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Laws

The Detective Division is normally staffed from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.  An on-call detective is available to respond as needed during off-duty or overnight hours.
