The Matawan Police Department Advanced Services Unit (ASU), formed January 2011, provides advanced response to incidents that require specialized training or equipment, such as vehicle extrication, ice and water rescue and response to tactical incidents (active shooter, armed encounters etc.).
The Advanced Services Unit is a unit within the Patrol Division and is supervised by a sergeant. There are five trained ASU officers within the agency. Members are assigned with the intention of having one ASU member on each of the four patrol squads. The fifth ASU officer serves as an alternate in the event an additional ASU officer is needed for a specific detail or event. The ASU officers are trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) and receive advanced training beyond that of the normal patrol officer/first responder.
The ASU vehicle contains various types of specialized equipment such as the TNT Storm Series combination tool (“Jaws of life”), cutting & prying tools, an automatic external defibrillator (AED), ballistic shield(s), rappelling rope and water rescue equipment
